Grant FAQ

The following entities are eligible to apply for a grant:

• IRS-Designated 501(c)(3) Public or Private Charity
• Public or Private Foundation Operating Under 501(c)(3) and 4940(d)(2)
• Governmental Instrumentality or Political Subdivision
• Agency or Organization Fiscally Sponsored By an IRS-Designated 501(c)(3) Organization
• Faith-Based Organization (for non-religious programs serving the broader community)

No grants will be awarded directly to individuals, and/or religious or political endeavors. In addition to meeting the above eligibility requirements, the applicant must reflect a majority of the following characteristics that are essential to JRF’s strategy for determining the merits and priority of an application and/or a potential JRF grantee:

• Is collaborative and/or complementary to existing programs and/or services.
• Has the potential to attract and/or leverage other resources.
• Promotes capacity-building and support for viable, sustainable nonprofit organizations.
• Addresses root causes and long-term solutions
• Presents clear, compelling, and credible evidence of need.

John Randolph Foundation is dedicated to building healthy communities and bright futures in the communities that were historically served by the hospital. This area encompasses the following localities, listed below in alphabetical order:

• Charles City County
• Colonial Heights
• Dinwiddie County
• Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly Fort Lee)
• Hopewell
• Petersburg
• Prince George County
• Southern Chesterfield County
• Surry County
• Sussex County
• Varina

Even though a nonprofit may be based outside of the defined service area, the percentage of its target population that resides within the JRF service area may be considered, along with the scope of its work as well as its alignment with our mission. These percentages must be accurately reflected on the grant application. Contact the grant program associate for clarification.

Community Contribution Grants

• Community contribution grant applications are accepted year-round and awarded to charitable organizations in the Tri-Cities region of Virginia for programs, projects, and events. Organizations who have received a JRF Responsive Grant are still eligible to apply. Award amounts do not exceed $1,500, and decisions are typically made within three weeks of submitting your application. Standard JRF grant eligibility criteria applies.

Responsive Grants

• Most of our grants are made in response to an application, i.e. responsive grantmaking. JRF Responsive Grants typically range from $5,000 to $50,000, though organizations are not limited to this range in their application. There is one Responsive Grant Cycle a year. Organizations interested in applying should submit an online Letter of Intent (LOI) by June 1, and grant checks are awarded in December to fund projects for the following calendar year.

As a new applicant, what is your recommendation for learning your process?

• We encourage organizations that have not applied before or have been previously denied to contact staff in early spring before applying.

The following types of support are available to eligible organizations through JRF grants:

• Program and service support.
• General operating support.
• Emergency/disaster prevention and recovery.
• Capital project support / special equipment.

The Foundation may issue challenge and matching grants at its discretion.

Unused grant funds may not be redirected for any other purpose without the approval of the JRF grant committee. Violation of this grant agreement term will result in revocation of the entire grant award.
